Properties:
Onyx marble, Mexican onyx and Egyptian or Oriental alabaster are terms applied to travertine. Travertine is generally less coarse-grained and takes a higher polish than stalactite and stalagmite. As with all natural materials shade and surface appearance, it can vary quite considerably. The surface appearance of the tile depends on the cutting technique at the quarry. Tiles are either cut with the natural grain of the stone or contra cut against the natural grain.
Availability:
Travertine is available in a number of finishes ranging from polish, cross-cut, regular-cut, honed & filled, honed & unfilled, tumbled, distressed-edge and unpolished. Harder than Limestone, these tiles are usually available in 12mm thickness, an important consideration when floor levels are an issue.
Color:
Travertine tile possess a wide range of colors, and cover the spectrum from pure white to deep mahogany. The various colors of Travertine tile can sometimes be constant throughout large pieces and at times are blended.
Cost:
Factory filled and honed tiles are more expensive than unfilled and are generally of higher quality. The upkeep can be easier than tiles filled by grouting. The weightless Travertine tiles are not so abundant and they usually cost more.
